VI. Interaction with Research Bodies and Programmes Ustification

Human mobility has increased considerably during the last few decades; the extent of international migration alone has reached an estimated of 100 million individuals and this figure is expected to rise over the coming decades. International Institutions potentially interested in the scientific results of the project are the International Labour Organisation (ILO), International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Moreover financial movements of notable proportions are linked to these migrations. Furthermore, the international mobility of individuals is closely linked to international commerce of services; remittance inflows alone go to make up nearly 10 percent of the total value of the international services market. Therefore, the main themes proposed for the new IGU-UGI Study Group consider questions that are of primary interest to the World Bank and the World Trade Organisation (WTO-OMC) in so much as they are matters that concern the balance of payments and international commerce.
